Celebrate Safely This Holiday Season: A Message from Mannis Law
Michael Mannis

The holidays in Chicagoland are full of joy—office parties, family gatherings, and midnight toasts that make great memories. At Mannis Law, we love this season too. We also know that one risky decision behind the wheel can change a life in seconds. If you plan to drink, plan, in advance, how you'll get home safely.

Pace Yourself & Know Your Limits

Holiday cheer shouldn’t mean overdoing it. Alternate cocktails with water or a festive mocktail, grab a plate before you pour, and listen to your body. Knowing your limits helps you enjoy the night without putting yourself—or anyone else—at risk.  The older I get, the more I draw the line at 'no drinking and driving.'  Our abilities to drive, as we all know, is colored by the drink or drinks we've had!

Plan a Safe Ride Before the First Sip

Make the plan first, celebrate second. Choose a designated sober driver, line up a rideshare, or use public transit where it makes sense. When the plan is set ahead of time, everyone can relax and enjoy.

Look Out for Friends & Loved Ones

We’re all in this together. If a friend has had too much:

  • Offer to call a rideshare or a cab

  • Invite them to stay the night

  • Take the keys if you need to
One small intervention can prevent a tragedy.

Hosting? Set the Tone for Responsible Fun

If you’re opening your home, you set the example:

  • Offer plenty of nonalcoholic options

  • Serve food throughout the evening

  • Stop alcohol service well before guests head out

  • Help coordinate safe rides home
Your hospitality can keep your guests—and everyone on the road—safe.

If Something Goes Wrong, Here’s What to Do

  • Check for injuries and call 911

  • Move to safety and turn on hazards

  • Exchange information and photograph the scene

  • Get medical attention, even if you feel okay

  • Speak with an attorney before dealing with insurers

From all of us at Mannis Law, we wish you a safe, warm, and happy holiday season. If you or someone you love is injured in a crash, we’re here to help. Call (312) 704-4300 for a free consultation.
