Thanksgiving Travel Safety Tips for Illinois Drivers
Michael Mannis

As Thanksgiving approaches, millions of Americans hit the road to share a meal with family and friends—most of them by car. With heavier traffic, unpredictable Midwestern weather, and increased wildlife activity (especially deer), a little extra preparation can go a long way in keeping your trip safe and stress-free.

Why Thanksgiving Driving Is Riskier

Holiday weeks bring:

  • Congested roads—particularly Wednesday afternoon and Sunday evening.

  • Rapidly changing conditions—ice, snow, and rain can move in fast.

  • Peak deer movement—crashes spike in late fall, especially at dawn and dusk.

Smart Safety Steps Before You Go

1) Watch for deer. November is prime time for deer collisions. There's something about November air that makes them a little crazy!  Slow down in wooded or rural areas, scan the shoulders, and use high beams when it’s safe to do so. If a deer crosses, expect more to follow.

2) Plan around peak traffic. If you can, leave early Wednesday morning or shift travel to less congested days. Build extra time into your schedule so you’re not tempted to speed.

3) Prepare for bad weather. Check the forecast. Make sure your tires, brakes, and windshield wipers are in good shape, and top off washer fluid. Pack an emergency kit with a blanket, flashlight, phone charger, and basic first-aid items.

4) Avoid distractions. Put the phone away. If you need navigation or music, set it before you start driving and use hands-free features.

5) Don’t drive drowsy or impaired. Fatigue and alcohol are major contributors to holiday crashes. Switch drivers on long trips, take breaks every 2–3 hours, and never get behind the wheel if you’ve been drinking.

If a Crash Happens, Here’s What to Do

  • Check for injuries and call 911.

  • Move to safety if possible and turn on hazard lights.

  • Document the scene: exchange information, photograph vehicles, road conditions, and any visible injuries.

  • Seek medical care promptly—even if you feel “okay.”

  • Talk to an attorney before dealing with insurers.
